BOARD OF DIRECTORS
    Dr. Nathan Zommer
Dr. Nathan Zommer founded IXYS in 1983 and has been an advocate of energy-efficient technologies as strategic investment opportunities. From the company’s inception to his role as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1993 to present, Dr Zommer is also leading the R&D teams worldwide in developing new products and new technologies, for the improvement of power conversion efficiency.
As the first fabless power semiconductor company, IXYS was conceived with the objective of bringing robust, high-current power MOSFETs, IGBTs, and control ICs to the market to facilitate the creation of higher-efficiency, high-frequency power systems. This concept formed the basis of IXYS’ unique name, from a focus on “integrated control systems.” As a Silicon Valley visionary, Dr. Zommer recognized the ascension of the Pacific Rim and the importance of developing a strategy of cooperation with its rising giants and, in 1985, he forged a key alliance with Samsung Semiconductor that continues to this day. Zommer also guided IXYS’ development of its HiperFET™ technology, a key milestone in developing the legendary GM EV1 electric car in 1989 and, later, the rugged IGBTs that assisted the development of the Tesla Roadster.
Improving efficiency and innovation with ever-improving technology-driven products has been a central theme for IXYS. After receiving his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, with a research emphasis in power transistors, Dr. Zommer started his career working with HP Labs in Palo Alto, CA with the legendary team headed by Dr. John Moll that pioneered the original D-MOS Power MOSFET and produced the very first 500V Power MOSFET.
Following his time with HP, Dr. Zommer joined Intersil to develop the Power MOS division, where his team was successful in developing a higher-voltage and better-performing Power MOSFET. When Intersil was acquired by General Electric in 1981, Dr. Zommer was teamed with Dr. Jayant B. Balgia as part of the GE CRD team in Schenectady, NY to pursue the modernization of GE’s power semiconductor technology. This effort resulted in the development of the first commercial IGBT.
Dr. Zommer went on to design and fabricate the first IGBTs in the Silicon Valley CMOS facility that he managed for GE. This pioneering work culminated in the publication of the first technical paper about IGBT technology at the International Electronic Devices Meeting in 1982. As an entrepreneur and inventor, Dr. Zommer holds more than 75 patents, has authored numerous technical papers and articles in the field, and has been an advisor to numerous startups worldwide.
